Plain-English answers

Water damage terms people mix together.

Does homeowners insurance include flood?

Do not assume that a homeowners, renters, condo, or landlord policy includes flood. This calculator separates flood or surface water into a flood-policy review path so the user can verify building and contents limits.

Is water backup the same as service line coverage?

No. Water backup, sewer or drain backup, sump overflow, and service line repair can involve different limits, deductibles, endorsements, and documents. The calculator keeps service line repair separate from cleanup or damage caused by backup.

What if I do not know the cause of the water damage?

Choose Not sure. The calculator produces a document-first result instead of guessing the cause or saying whether something is payable.

Can this tell me whether to file a claim?

No. It compares entered amounts with limits shown on policy pages and organizes documents. It does not recommend filing or not filing a claim, predict premium effects, or decide what the carrier owes.

What documents should I gather for a water damage review?

Gather the current declarations page, water backup or sewer/drain endorsement, flood declarations page if one exists, service line endorsement if one exists, photos, repair estimates, mitigation invoices, plumbing reports, and any HOA, landlord, lender, or property-manager notices.

Glossary

Terms used in the calculator

Water backup
A review path for sewer, drain, backup, or sump overflow wording when shown on a policy or endorsement.
Flood
Surface water or flood review should be separated from the home, renters, condo, or landlord policy unless a separate policy or endorsement says otherwise.
Service line
A separate review path for underground utility or piping repair. It is not the same as a water backup limit.
Amount above an entered limit
The rough entered amount minus the limit shown on the policy page. It is a review prompt, not a payment promise or policy interpretation.
